Drinking Water-Irrigation
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STUDY REGARDING THE LAND RECLAMATION PROJECT: RESERVOIR IN NISYROS ISALND, DODEKANISΟU PREFECTURE (PHASE A’ & B’)

Client:  Ministry of Agriculture – Division of Land Reclamation Works
Year:    1996

ISSUE
The purpose of the study was to draft an environmental impact study for the Environmental Terms approval stage, regarding the use of the reservoir in Nisyros Island. More specifically the works included the required arrangements for the irrigation of a small perimeter area of 2 hectares adjacent to the reservoir, which involved connection to the dam’s abstraction works, pumping station and network of underground piping to implement irrigation with drops downstream of the dam and the introduction of water treatment arrangements, using the proposed irrigation pumping station, with the interpolation of a second pumping station to Nisyros town’s potable water supply tank.

SOLUTION                                                                                                    Project arrangements view
ΥΔΡΕΥΣΗWater shortage is considered the main factor and cause of dry farming implementation resulting in low yields, while residents are forced to purchase products from other regions, especially vegetables, via problematic transportation conditions, especially during winter months, while water inefficiency implies failure to extend and organize local and insular agriculture.

The reservoir is located in Partheni region in Nisyros, just 3km off Palon community.

As far as the main works are concerned, these are listed as follows:

In the accounted study the exact locations of the construction works were identified while the current situation was analyzed, investigating of the state of the natural and human environment. At the same time significant information was offered with respect to the feasibility of the works along with their analytical description.

Finally, the extent and size of the caused environmental annoyance from the construction and operation of the works was described, while appropriate methods to treat environmental impacts during construction and operation phase were provided.

BENEFIT
The study was submitted to the department responsible for environmental licensing of the proposed works contributing to the resolution of cultivated land irrigation and potable water supply problems on the island of Nisyros.
